Prior to that, she owned her own hair salon, Najai’s Aura Barber Styling, where she received wide industry praise for the salon’s creative hair designs and for her extraordinary customer service. In 2004, Najai’s creative talents landed her an outstanding role in The Vagina Monologues. Beginning in 2000, D’Raughn began writing her own column, Najai’s Cup of Cocoa, in the Providence Times. Her column was extremely well-received as it spoke to the minds of single mothers, male and female youth, and their responsibility as young people, to those who preceded and laid the path for their successes, to the significance of a relationship to GOD. Since then she has performed in many poetry slams and has served as a supporting director of a few local plays. In 1993, she became the Director of the Public Health component domiciled at a Women's facility. Her primary focus was to develop health and healing avenues for woman recovering from Substance abuse and other public health issues such as HIV and AIDS. During this time an opportunity arose to write an article about the dreadful disease of Aids and it's affect on her community. She wasted no time submitting her work for consideration and accomplished her first publication in the Bay Windows Community Newspaper.
At a very young age she discovered an attraction to the literary work of famous poets that were other black woman such as Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou and became inspired by them. She speaks of a time when she herself was the “caged bird singing” and when "Ego Tripping" brought substance and purpose to her life when she was just eleven years old. Ms. D'Raughn says that she strongly identified with these works her own talent and ability to deliver wisdom thru vision and writing. By age 16 Ms. D'Raughn had written over 200 poems. At age 21 after some serious life challenges she began to dream of being published and gained a sense that her work was met to be shared with the world.
Najai D'Raughn currently owns and operates Men of Marvel, an upscale male imaging salon located in the West End Historic District in Dallas, TX. She continues to write and is currently compiling all of her writing for the purpose of publishing books of poetry, philosophy and logical thinking.
