There are times when I feel so overwhelmed. Like when I have too much to do, obviously. Vacationing in San Diego a few years ago and only having a few days to do absolutely everything. (As I typed that sentence, I remembered a few more cool things I didn't get to do while I was there, but oh well.)
Sometimes the overwhelming sensation occurs at more serious times, though. And sometimes it can lead to anxiety, paralyzing fear, panic attacks or even a sense of complete hopelessness. On a regular basis, I hear people sharing how overwhelmed they feel. It seems to be a very common part of life. Like taxes. Or bad television. So, the question is this: Is it even possible to lead a life free from feeling overwhelmed?
I could pull from scripture, personal experience, or countless how-to internet articles and go on and on sharing with you a list of steps to follow. But, pictures are worth a thousand words. Take another look at the picture of the child above. Now notice your reaction to it - was it pity and compassion or did it make you smile? Probably smile. Now does that mean you find secret joy from a child experiencing torment? No, I would guess you don't, but then again I don't know you.
You probably smiled because it's cute, adorable even, for a child to express that emotion of being overwhelmed because the child has no responsibilities other than to rely on their parents for everything. So when you see a child gesture that they are overwhelmed, you know they're simply imitating what they've seen their parents do.
Jesus said, "...The Son is able to do only what He sees the Father doing, for whatever the Father does is what the Son does in the same way [in His turn]."
Can you find me one scripture of the Father being overwhelmed? I'll wait.
Nothing, huh? I didn't think so.
Jesus also said, "Truly I say to you, unless you repent (change, turn about) and become like little children [trusting, lowly, loving, forgiving], you can never enter the kingdom of heaven [at all]."
So just accept that you're His child.
So when I am overwhelmed, I immediately speak aloud, praying "Father, in the name of Jesus, I come to you as a child. I give You all my cares. Thank you. Amen." And every time I do that, I have clarity, perspective and strength to go at my day, handling just one thing at a time by the grace of God.
That's it. Sound too simple to work?
Do it first.
